Petersfield

Forty-Seven is located in Petersfield, an area in Manchester known for its rich history and tales, including The Peterloo Massacre, which took place on St Peter’s Field, many years before Lancashire House was built, on 16th August 1819. A large group of protestors gathered, but this would end in disaster and soon became one of the most poignant moments in Manchester’s history.

Then there were the rebellious Suffragettes - led by Emmeline Pankhurst and her family - campaigning for votes for women and their fight for equality, as they took their campaign from parlour to parliament. Here at Forty-Seven we honour the history of the area with subtle nods throughout the hotel.

47 Peter Street

The address 47 Peter Street has a great history in Manchester. Originally built in 1868, it was first named Lancashire House, when it was designed by the Manchester architectural practice of Walters, Bark and Ellis to be a shipping warehouse - in what was already a factory-filled city. Located on the corner of Peter Street and Southmill Street, the building has seen many changes over the years; in the 19th Century, the warehouse had the Gaiety Theatre as a neighbour. Since then, with the vast development of the city, it is now one of the most sort-after locations in Manchester.

The Peterman Story

The story starts here on Peter Street in 1868, when Forty-Seven was built as a shipping warehouse. At this time, the ‘Manchester Evening News’ published its first newspaper story, and five notorious Petermen saw this as a way they could make a headline – but also avoid ‘Strangeways’; Manchester’s newly opened high-security prison.

A ‘Peterman’ was known as a safecracker, someone who could crack into safes without the key or combination. Make your way down to The Peterman, our lavish bar, to see where they would discuss plans and share trade secrets. Whilst you sip our signature cocktails, you can learn more about these notorious stories, with the chance to crack open your own safe.

Forty-Seven

Forty-Seven’s history brings the building to life, with bold interiors and design-led features. We believe its natural playfulness matches that of the city, with signature touches that mirror the vibrancy of Peter Street. The design today, teamed with the original story of ‘The Peterman’ creates a luxury experience that will leave you with lasting memories.

At Forty-Seven, we believe in creating “Forty-Seven memories” for our guests. Whether this be enjoying cocktails in The Peterman, dining at the renowned Asha’s, or catching “Forty-Seven winks” in your suite or bedroom.

Asha’s

Here at Forty-Seven, we’re home to the renowned Asha’s restaurant, an award winning Indian culinary destination founded by Asha Bhosle, the world famous Bollywood singer and actor.

Serving authentic Indian food, Asha Bhosle has married the two great passions of her life – music and food. With its elegant interiors and lavish comfort, it is a setting worthy of Michelin-listed cuisine. The success of Asha’s is the same as that of Asha the recording artist – authenticity, beautifully refined tase above all, love.

Forty-Seven winks…

Here at Forty-Seven, we believe your sleep experience is just as important as when you’re awake and creating your Forty-Seven memories. In collaboration with Kerry Davies, a.k.a. ‘The Sleep Fixer’, we have designed our bedrooms and suites to allow you to have a better night’s sleep - because after all - catching ‘Forty-Seven winks’ is better than catching Forty.

Luxury linen and bedding, considered textures and bedroom acoustics, along with the little extra touches, are all built into our design to stimulate a better night’s sleep.
